There’s this idea that if you’re not at your desk, you’re not working. I used to believe that too.
Six years into freelancing, I’ve learned it’s one of the most damaging things you can tell yourself.
So last week, I did something radical. I closed the laptop, left the proposals and content calendars behind, and went out. No agenda. Just a good seat, a good meal, and a little time to breathe.
The place had this painting on the wall, a woman in a red dress, mid-stride, caught in the wind. She looked like she was going somewhere on her own terms. I sat there staring at it longer than I probably should have.
That’s the funny thing about stepping away. You don’t stop thinking. You start thinking differently. The mental noise quiets down, and you start seeing your work from the outside again, the problems, the patterns, the things you’ve been too close to notice.
Some of my best ideas for client campaigns, content angles, and copy hooks have come not at my desk, but in moments exactly like this one.
If you’re a freelancer, a business owner, or anyone who runs on mental energy, please take a break. Not as a reward. As part of the work.
The screen will be there when you get back. And you’ll be sharper when you sit back down.
